Blue Ghost Fireflies are a rare firefly, or “blue ghost lightnin’ bug” as I grew up calling them, are a rare firefly that are native to Western NC. 
They are found in the forests of Southern Appalachia in elevations from 2,000-4,000 ft and emit a blue light during mating season. 
I found them around the highest spring on my mountain in Madison County and I would hike half a mile at night to sit and watch them.
